SS KEEWATIN
The 346 by 43 foot, 3,856 gross ton SS KEEWATIN is still beautifully preserved at her moorings at Douglas, MI, having served as a floating museum since cheating the scrappers in 1967. Another unique “funnel aft” prototype, the Fairfield-built liner dates to 1907, when she sailed from their yard at Govan, Scotland to Montreal, where she was cut in two for passage through the St. Lawrence and Welland canals. Once at Buffalo she was reassembled and put into weekly Canadian Pacific Lake Superior service. A contemporary of Cunard’s LUSITANIA and MAURETANIA, her interiors and partially preserved engine room are most remarkable. Occasionally used for special events, she is open daily between late May (Memorial Day) and early September. Vintage Passenger Ship Roundup index
