Review by Martin Cox

MAURETANIA: Triumph and Resurrection, Peter Newall

Mr. Newall's book is a riveting and unusual portrait of a much loved ocean liner. Interestingly, as Peter notes, that despite MAURETANIA's fame, this cherished ship has had little published on her in recent times. There is now no further need, "Triumph and Resurrection" is the ultimate MAURETANIA book. Well laid out with abundant images, the flowing text takes the reader through Mr. Newall's obviously deeply researched material.

The book is packed with pictures, fold outs, deck plans, menus, travel posters and all manor of things MAURETANIA. Covering the liner's conception, design, construction and launch, Mr. Newall takes us on an illustrated journey from the exuberance of her design and speed, to war time duty, Atlantic success, her now legendary cruises, and finally to her ultimate demise. Then the book takes an unusual turn, the full last third of the book is devoted to tracking down the remains of this great ship. After scrapping, much of the ship was bought and reused throughout Britain. Mr. Newhall has documented and brought to life MAURETANIA's second life. He examines the many remaining treasures from MAURETANIA, the story and lineage of her interior design: clearly so appealing and so well built that she reappeared in buildings across the UK.

Mr. Newall has painstakingly reassembled this great liner through his detailed research and well produced excellent colour photographs. Thanks to this highly unusual and far above the average ocean liner history, the reader, much like a forensic anthropologist, may rediscover a lost civilization. "MAURETANIA: Triumph and Resurrection" brings this great ship back from history right to the present day in full color.
