SS MILWAUKEE CLIPPER
The 4,272 gross ton, 361 by 45 foot SS MILWAUKEE CLIPPER began her
career in 1905 as Anchor Line's JUNIATA for Great Lakes cruise service. A
complete rebuilding in 1940 turned the elegant, “funnel aft” steamer into
Wisconsin and Michigan Company’s streamlined ferry liner MILWAUKEE CLIPPER
for cross-lake Muskegon to Milwaukee service. After her retirement in 1970,
she bounced from berth to berth, serving for a time as a floating attraction
at Chicago and nearby Hammond, Indiana. Later, she languished at a South
Chicago coal pier, before being towed to Muskegon, MI for restoration as a
floating museum and hotel/convention center. Having saved her from the
breakers, the non-profit S.S.
Milwaukee Clipper Preservation, Inc. has been working around the clock to restore
this art deco liner to its former glory.
