COSTA CONCORDIA Fuel Removed

Italy’s Civil Protection agency reported that that on Sunday, all the fuel had been removed from the forward tanks of the capsized COSTA CONCORDIA.  The Dutch company Smit, which is responsible for extracting the fuel, detached the salvage barge and attending tanker ELBE from the hull and moved them back to nearby Giglio, having removed approximately two thirds of the entire fuel load.

The above video, which was compiled from 1,000 images from a webcam on January 27 by ErnstV and posted to You-tube, shows the position of the wreck and the frenetic activity surrounding it just outside the port for Giglio, off Italy’s west coast.

Update:  As divers continued searching for the remaining 15 people missing since the January 13 disaster, news came today that another 8 bodies had been located. The total death toll, including those still missing and presumed dead, is listed at 32.
