The DFDS ferry KING SEAWAYS (ex NILS HOLGERSOON, VAL DE LOIRE, KING OF SCANDINAVIA) departed North Shields, UK last night for Amsterdam, Netherlands, when a fire broke out in a passenger cabin about 10:45pm local time when the ship was some 30 miles of shore.

A spokeswoman for DFDS Seaways said 946 passengers and 127 crew members were on board the 31,360 GT cruise ferry. Fifteen passengers and eight crew members were reported to have suffered from smoke-related injuries.  Seven crew and passengers needed to be collected by helicopter and flown back to a UK hospital for smoke inhalation.  The ship turned back to port arriving in the early hours of this morning.

Two passengers suspected of starting the fire have been detained.
