QUEEN MARY 2’s 10th Anniversary Southampton Welcome

QUEEN MARY 2’s 10th ANNIVERSARY SOUTHAMPTON WELCOME

By Peter Newall

After their magnificent departure from Lisbon, the three Cunard Queens arrived at Southampton today, (May 9, 2014) to celebrate ten years of Queen Mary 2.

Cunard arranged a special charter of Blue Funnel’s Ashleigh R to take a select group of journalists and photographers to meet the Cunard fleet. As I am most definitely not a morning person, the 4am departure was something of a shock. However, as the following photos show, it was well worth it, especially as the Southampton weather was perfect for once.

The first to arrive in the dark was Queen Elizabeth.

She was followed by Queen Victoria.

The rising of the sun announced Queen Mary 2’s arrival.

With her fire hoses at full flow, the Svitzer tug Svitser Sarah escorted Queen Mary 2 down the Solent.

Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria were berthed bow to bow as Queen Mary 2 sailed past. She was greeted by blasts from the ships whistles and the sounds of “Happy birthday to you”. The light was perfect!

Have you come far? The Duke looked pretty spritely for a 92 year old.

The Duke of Edinburgh probably enjoyed his short visit to the magnificent Queen Mary 2 as much as we did.
