HMCS PROTECTEUR was towed into Pearl Harbor, Hawaii today, following an engine room fire which broke out on February 27, causing the ship to lose power 340 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii. The ship was returning from operations with the U.S. Navy in the mid-Pacific and carrying 279 crew, 17 family members and two civilian contractors when a fire broke out in the engine room around 10:20 p.m. Pacific Time,  some twenty crew members suffered minor injuries, (smoke inhalation, dehydration and exhaustion).

Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship PROTECTEUR (AOR 509) is the lead ship of the Protecteur-class replenishment oilers in service with the Royal Canadian Navy. She is part of the Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC), homeported at CFB Esquimalt, British Columbia.

The guided-missile cruiser USS CHOSIN oversaw the towing operation by a U.S. Navy ocean tug which was hampered by rough seas and broken tow lines.

HMCS PROTECTEUR was built by Saint John Shipbuilding and Dry Docks in Saint John, New Brunswick, and commissioned on August 30, 1969.

An investigation into the cause of he fire will commence shortly.

The Royal Canadian Navy perviously had announced that PROTECTEUR, and her sister ship PRESERVER, are scheduled to be paid off in 2017.
