March 30: The fifth ship to leave the Suisun reserve fleet near San Francisco, CA, since October 2009 is being prepared for departure. 1943- built tanker MISSION SANTA YNEZ is scheduled for removal from the fleet March 31. MISSION SANTA YNEZ was built under a Maritime Commission contract by Marinship Corporation at Sausalito, CA and launched December 19, 1943. Chartered to Pacific Tankers, Inc., she spent the rest of World War II supplying US forces overseas until 1946 when she was returned to the Maritime Commission and laid up briefly in the Maritime reserve Fleet at James River, VA. MISSION SANTA YNEZ was taken over by the US Naval Transportation Service in 1947. Later acquired by Military Sea Transportation Service in 1949 she was designated USNS MISSION SANTA YNEZ (T-AO-134). She entered the Maritime Administration’s Suisun Bay reserve fleet on March 6, 1975. USNS MISSION SANTA YNEZ is the last T-2 tanker in existence.
