MaritimeMatters Shifts Berths
|
In an effort to keep the MaritimeMatters site growing, we will be moving to a new server this weekend. Beginning Friday night (PST), there may be some down time but it should be resolved by the following morning, January 8th.
We hope there will be a minimum of interruption as we shift to another wind-powered host.
Best regards,
Martin Cox

Interesting picture above, the two ships seen brooding in the gloom. I recognize the Oceanic, at least, her uperstructure. could be the big red boat, dark hull? I can see my favorite stateroom windows, Belvedere Deck, B2 and B4, straight out overlooking bow. Sailed SS Oceanic with Home Lines many times. LOVED HER. Saw her two summers ago in Italy, still lovely. NOW, here is a real poser:
Her days are numbered, SOLAS, and the like. Who will want to take this beauty into their care and preserve her? if I could, I would.
Love this website! Did you happen to catch the U.S. show “Undercover Boss” on Sunday? It had the CEO of NCL going undercover on the Pride of America and Epic. It showed him in his office with a model of the Norway on his desk, how ironic to see a model of the ship that they destroyed.
Congrats on the migration!
My we seem to be featuring ports and terminals of late, and what great places they can be, if ones ship has come in I truly appreciate the pics from Southampton and LA.
Last week Philadelphia announced the permanent closing of its passenger terminal. That leaves the SS United States still languishing in Philly, off by herself, unknown and unloved for now.
I live about an hour North of Norfolk Va. Holland America announced a major plan to homeport the comely Maasdam there, 2005. The city was using a TENT as its terminal, and the city blew 25$million to build a new terminal. BAM – a year before the terminal was completed, HAL pulled out. I managed to take 5 cruises on the Maasdam during its brief tenure here 10/11 day Caribbean cruises. The ship was totally booked on each cruise.
The Half Moon Terminal, as it is called, is as critical a feature to Norfolk as any major building, it sets off the waterfront, and is a major focal point in the city.. State of the Art. It was placed well, next to the permantly moored USS Wisconsin at the Nauticus, which also houses a museum and helped to put Norfolk at the forefront, a major player, in the cruise industry.. It did not come to pass.
What were they thinking? what are they doing? Two cruises 2011 for Norfolk, one 2 day, one 4. Not HAL, either.
So, Philly says bon voyage to its cruise industry, and Baltimore is losing cruises right and left. It is amazing that some cruises catch on in some cities, while other cities seem doomed to failure. Mobile Alabama?
Carnival has added another ship for sailings from Mobile.
Mobile? Who knew……..
Here is a truly fun musing. Imagine taking a crsuie in a land-locked American state to a foreign country, maybe, perhaps, France.
Well, you can (not France, but, “france”!!!!!!
Vermont Discovery Voyages has one comely little ship, the Moonlight Lady, as she is called. She sails on over night cruises in Lake Champlain, a really huge lake that seperatyes New York from Vermont. She also sails 7 day cruises from Burlington Vermont, through an old canal system, to Montreal Quebec, French Canada.
The ship has cabins, private baths, three meals per day, wine and other libations, and makes stops along the way. Vermont is heaven on earth, for those unfamiliar with it. Lore has it that “Champ” roams the lake, al la Loch Ness. Prices are similar to a sea cruise, starting at 975.00US 1675.00 for Montreal.
I lived in Vermont for twelve years and never knew of this cruise option. I love French Canada, and this cruise appeals to me greatly.
Peter, Shawn, Martin – can you be tempted to try this one?

Is there any way to access older articles like from 1999-2005?
Hi Hank: Sadly not at this time, I have planned to upload all the older content, but finding the time to work on this while getting all the current articles and blogs posted out has proved too hard so far, but I remain hopeful for the future, just cannot say when yet.
Okay. If there is anything I can ever do to help I will be happy to.
