MV DEUTSCHLAND Fire — Updated
|
An engine room fire was reported on Peter Deilmann Cruises’ deluxe MV DEUTSCHLAND in western Norway, resulting in the evacuation of 607 passengers and crew on Sunday, May 23, rescue officials said. All 364 passengers on board the 1998-built, 22,400 gt, 520-passenger vessel were evacuated safely. In addition to the 241 crew members, two Norwegian ship pilots were on board the DEUTSCHLAND, which is well-known in Germany for featuring in the TV-show “Das Traumschiff.” Passengers were taken to a nearby hotel and will be flown back to Germany.
Update: The DEUTSCHLAND was towed to Bergen, then Germany, repairs. The ship will remain out of service until the end of June. Click here to read Peter Knego’s “Mediterranean Medley” Sea Treks blog about a 2009 cruise on board the MV DEUTSCHLAND.

Hopefully this will not keep her from service for very long
DEUTSCHLAND also features in the Andre Rieu DVD musical extravaganza, “Love Around the World.”
I’m glad no one was hurt when this occurred. I remember when this ship was waiting in NY for passengers flying on the concorde from France and they had to go on to Port Canaveral. I could just imagine what that sad voyage was like.
It is unfortunate that the fire occurred at a time when the company is undergoing bankruptcy proceedings re its river boats. My gut feeling is that the company is now badly managed and alas we may see the end of Deilmann altogether. I traveled on the Deutschland and she is a wonderful ship–at least that was the case in 2005. At that time, there was talk among crew officers that certain family members were not running the company as they should.
Hopefully Deilmann will be around for a while. I travelled on their ship Berlin before she was sold and she was quite a smart little liner. Time will tell.
I hope the crews and passengers are ok..my brother is one of the kitchen crew..in grill station
it was a nice ship
