QUEEN MARY Hosts Steamship Historical Society of America’s ShiPosium
Maritime enthusiasts with gather May 2 – May 5th in Long Beach, Southern California for “ShiPosium II” on board the QUEEN MARY.
The ShiPosium brings SSHSA members and ship history enthusiasts together with representatives of historic vessels that are currently or potentially endangered for any number of reasons. The representatives present case studies of their efforts to preserve their favorite, most times passionately favorite, ship from oblivion. They share their successes, failures, frustrations, and hopes for the future.
The ShiPosium is held in tandem with SSHSA’s Annual Conference, attended by SSHSA members from all over the country. Attendees are invited to attend social gatherings, outings to local attractions; and special maritime-related tours, in addition to the ShiPosium.
More than a conference – it’s a great way to have some fun, meet other members of the SSHSA, and see some of the things that make us all love ship history.
Let’s start with our host vessel. If you arrive on Thursday, May 2, you’ll ha
ve time to explore. TheQueen Mary offers one of the last opportunities to delve into a classic ocean liner. On their own, the art deco décor and the cambered decks are well worth a visit. Add to that the “Legacy of a Princess” exhibitor one of the night time historic or paranormal tours, and you’ve got something for everyone. Of course, you and your family can enjoy these tours anytime during the weekend if you don’t have time on Thursday!
Then, join SSHSA members for a casual yet elegant President’s Reception on the QM, with open bar! Its a great way to meet other members who are in town for the conference and to ease your way into the weekend.
On Friday, enjoy the ShiPosium…or some of the other things Southern California has to offer.

The mission of the Steamship Historical Society of America is to record, preserve, and disseminate the history of engine-powered vessels.
Background
SSHSA was established in 1935 as a means of bringing together amateur and professional historians interested in the history and development of steam navigation, past and present. Today, our members include maritime collectors and artists, current and former crew members, historians and students, genealogists, scuba divers, cruise travelers, ship engineers and architects, and maritime history enthusiasts.
Incorporated in the State of Virginia in 1950 as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) educational corporation, SSHSA is the oldest maritime organization in America and a vital source and authority of the nautical and maritime history of engine-powered vessels, from the earliest steam-powered ships to modern ocean liners.
Today, with extensive collections of maritime photos, periodicals, artwork, official records, memorabilia and ephemera, SSHSA is the oldest and largest organization of its kind in the world.
